Disabled Veterans Care
It’s a sad fact. Increasingly, U.S. troops are leaving the military with damaged minds and bodies. A larger pool of disabled veterans, in turn, will cost the nation billions of dollars in care for decades to come.
Many American soldiers from World War II and Korea have already died. Yet, despite the decline in the total number of veterans, the government expects to be spending $59 billion a year to compensate injured warriors 25 years from now, up from today’s $29 billion in annual expenditures (Source: VA records obtained by The Associated Press).
According to CBS News, since 2001, the number of disabled veterans has risen to 2.9 million, a 25 percent jump. The bad news is that the percentage of U.S. veterans who are wounded and on disability is rising. The good news is that more U.S. veterans are aware of their benefits and are seeking the care they deserve in greater numbers. This means that more facilities for disabled veterans will be needed in the near future – leading to an expected construction boon in veterans care facilities in the U.S., whether they be publicly or privately-financed.
In 2016, the Veterans Affairs (VA) announced a program calling for partners to meet this need. Public Law 114-294, the “Communities Helping Invest through Property and Improvements Needed for Veterans Act of 2016,” was authorized to help fund and expedite the construction of health-care related capital VA projects. Also known as “the CHIP-IN Act, this legislation is designed to help the VA modernize the department and enhance service to veterans by streamlining and instituting infrastructure improvements to health-care facilities.”
One of the first CHIP-IN Act construction partners helped to build an Ambulatory Care Center for veterans in Omaha, Nebraska (shown above). This Center will provide a much-needed facility to veterans in the region faster than a traditional funding and construction timeframe, with a reduced burden on the taxpayer.
